Peterlee Labour Club, Manor Way, Peterlee, Durham. SR8 5SN. Venue telephone number is 0191 586 4990.

Venue - We play in the Manor Lounge, first right after the main entrance and before you reach the bar. We have the room to ourselves, there is some noise that carries through from the bar, but it is a proper workingmen's club after all.

Juniors - Must be accompanied by an adult and parents be aware that the some of the adults will be drinking alcohol in their presence (some of us much more than others!)

I'm just a beginner is it ok to come down? - Yes of course, all the players will gladly show you the ropes and give you some tips and tricks to help improve your game.
But please remember this, you won't win a game for a while, you need to have realistic expectations about your ability as a new player, you can't expect to turn up and beat players who've been playing for over 20 years and more.
YOU WILL BE BEATEN MANY TIMES!!

You need to have a thick skin and perseverance! Chess is an easy game to learn, but it takes real effort to get better, Its our goal to help you and have fun playing, that's what its all about.

Its my first time, what do I do? - Contact us via email at peterleechessclub@gmail.com or call/text Collin on 07766 882194 to make sure we'll be there and not playing an away match etc. then come down on a Tuesday evening around 7.15pm and play a few games with no pressure in a very relaxed atmosphere

Do I need to bring anything? - No, all of the sets, boards, clocks, scoresheets and even the pens are provided for you, just bring yourself!

History - Peterlee Chess Club has been in existence since October 1972. During that time we've played in most pubs and clubs in and around Peterlee! We have been Cleveland League Champions on four occasions and won the Knock Out Cup four times. In the Durham league we've won the B Division and The Ron Evers Handicap Tournament three times.

Teams - As of the 2016-17 season we have one team in the Co Durham League  So there is ample opportunity to play competitive chess every other week.

Competitions - Each year we hold a club championship and a time handicap tournament, these are played at the end of the season and during the summer months with the intention of finishing them before the new season begins.

We are the only Chess Club in the whole of the East Durham area, so if you're from the south end of Sunderland, Seaham, Ryhope, Murton, Easington, Horden, Blackhall, Hesleden, Wingate, Station Town, all the Trimdons, Fishburn, Sedgefield, Coxhoe, Quarrington Hill, Cassop, Thornley, Wheatley Hill, Ludworth, Shadforth, Shotton, Haswell, and of course Peterlee. We are your nearest and therefore your local chess club.

The nearest clubs to Peterlee are Durham in the West, South Shields in the North, and Hartlepool in the South.

Players - We're a smallish club at the moment with 11 regular members who have playing strengths that vary from beginner to decent county standard and ages that range from 16 to 76.

We're perfect for the beginner to learn from and we're strong enough to pose a great challenge for the more experienced player.

How much? - It will cost you nothing until you decide to join the club. We operate a 'try before you buy' policy, you will know after a few visits if you're going to become a 'proper' chess player or not.

Membership Fees? - If all you're after is simply to play a few friendly games and learn at a steady pace, then it will only cost you £10 a year!
